Work is well underway on PCA’s latest project for Fraser Coast Regional Council, with the design and delivery of the Happy Valley entrance ramp and boardwalk on K’gari.
The project will rebuild the existing entrance ramp and boardwalk, which sustained damage during Cyclone Alfred in March 2025. The access is a vital connection for residents, providing the main route from the beach into the Happy Valley community. It is also heavily used by locals and tourists and serves as an important midpoint on K’gari, connecting the eastern and western sides of the island.
K’gari, meaning ‘paradise’, is renowned for its unique sand dunes, freshwater ecosystems and environmentally sensitive environment. The island’s outstanding natural and cultural values are recognised through its World Heritage status, making the careful and respectful delivery of infrastructure projects particularly important.
It is a tremendous honour for PCA to be involved in the redevelopment of this important community access and to contribute to restoring a well-used connection for residents and visitors to the island.
As part of the commencement of the project, the PCA team had the opportunity to participate in a smoking ceremony conducted on Country by the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation, with Gemma Cronin leading the ceremony. The ceremony provided an opportunity for the PCA team to recognise and respect the cultural heritage of the area and participate in an important cultural observance and custom. It also provided an opportunity to bless the ground, PCA workers and machinery before works continued.
Participating in the ceremony demonstrated PCA’s commitment to respecting tradition, Country and the cultural heritage of the communities in which we work. It was also a valuable opportunity for our team to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the cultural heritage and significance of the area.
